This painting is inspired by the beautiful countryside in the western parts of the United States. New Mexico in particular comes to mind. I love the high desert country where you can look out on a vast expanse of flat land that becomes mountains far in the distance. The sunsets in these areas can be extraordinary.
The blues and greens in this painting hold their own against the the bold oranges, reds, and yellows.
I hope this piece can help you remember a beautiful vista you have seen.

Northern Lights
Acrylic, tempera, and plaster on high profile canvas (48" W x 24" H x 1.75" D)
The mountains are some of my favorite places on Earth, the crispness of the air, the big sky views, and the altitudes. This painting gives me all these things. It reminds me of New Mexico or Colorado where I could hike among the giant pine and aspen trees and look out across an expansive vista.
I used acrylic paints in blues, golds, and coppers to give this piece its big sky look. Before I put on the colors though, I applied a plaster based texture to the canvas to give it more character and complexity. In the final step I applied several coats of non-toxic polyurethane to bring out the colors and protect the paint.
